A Siren Sit-down with Marko Jovanović

We had the chance to sit down with our friend and Siren content contributor, Marko Jovanović. Our discussion included everything from musical influences to favorite guitars. You can read our discussion below.
About Marko Jovanović
Writer/editor for Ultimate-Guitar, the biggest guitar spot on the web, since early 2013. Bassist. Travel enthusiast. King Crimson fan.

At what age did you pick up the guitar and who or what inspired you to do so?

I was 16 when I got my first bass. The song that made me want to pick up the bass "Peace Sells" by Megadeth, I was hooked the first time I heard that intro line.

Which band or musician has influenced you the most?

David Ellefson, who played that "Peace Sells" bass track, was a major influence in getting the bass in the fist place and playing it with a pick. Other guys that made a big impact on me include Andy Fraser of Free, Tool's Justin Chancellor, and the immortal Jaco Pastorius.

What are you listening to more than anything else right now?

Right now, the new Tool record, "Fear Inoculum."

Which pedal is your favorite on your pedalboard and why?

The Boss CEB-3 Bass Chorus, I love the extra clarity and punch the chorus effect gives to a bass.

Any practice or warm-up routines you consider a must?

Stretch your hands and fingers properly and you're good to go.

If you could go back in time and offer the younger version of yourself advice about learning the guitar, what you would tell them?

Focus more on the big picture instead of on your own instrument. Always serve the song.

Which guitar is your #1 and why?

My Ibanez ATK-305, I enjoy the extended range and the sonic versatility it offers.

When not playing guitar, what do you do in your free time?

I'm lucky to say my job position at Ultimate Guitar is an enjoyable activity, so there's definitely that. Apart from UG, I enjoy traveling as often as possible, attending live shows and watching movies.

What's next for you?

More work, more travel.

Where can people find you online?

You can check out my work over on Ultimate Guitar in the News section.
